A Normal Day

Someone very wise once said “normal is a setting on your dryer” and I would agree with that and even add one more thing…I never use the normal setting. Normal, on my dryer, shrinks my clothes because the heat is too high. So I guess in my life, “normal” doesn’t even apply to the way I dry my laundry.

Dave Ramsey’s take on normal is this – “I don’t want to be normal. Normal is broke!”
We aren’t debt free yet but we aren’t broke either, I guess I don’t mind being abnormal here.

Married couples end in divorce 50% of the time and I’m pretty sure surviving 50% aren’t all happy so a happy marriage isn’t normal either. This is also one that I am happy to be abnormal about.

I guess my day to day wouldn’t be considered “normal” either. For starters, I’m happy. It’s not normal to be a happy person. How do I know this? I live in Brandon. NO ONE here is ever happy. People are mad about traffic, their boss, the weather, the the lady who has 12 items in the express lane…etc. I personally tend to see things differently. If you are mad about traffic, you should just be glad to have a car that is taking you where you have to go. If you are mad about your boss, you should be happy you have a job in this economy. If you are mad about the weather and you live in Florida, just wait a few minutes and it will change. If you do not live in Florida, this is one that you brought on yourself by not living in Florida. And as far as the lady with 12 items goes, just be thankful that your biggest challenge with feeding your family today was having to wait an extra 5 minutes.

My life is not perfect but it’s pretty darn good when I add up all the blessings. As a Christian, my joy doesn’t come automatically but it should be natural. Even the challenges in my life are for my good according to Romans 8:28. So whenever you find yourself in the middle of “one of those days” and you have the thought “I just want to have a normal day!!” (personally I’ve never thought this….and I’m also a big, fat lier) just remember that “normal” normally sucks and that you always have more to be thankful for than you remember in that moment.

So I guess being abnormal isn’t so bad after all. How do you feel about it?

  1. Your mom told me that once! I never forgot it, and it’s helpful when I’m having a rough day. Normal is completely subjective.

By the way…I love the picture of that lagoon…I want to go to there…
