SAHM: a day in my life

In case you have ever thought “What do those ‘stay at home moms’ do all day?” or “Why can’t you go out to the mall if you’re so stressed?” or “how are you fat when you have all the time in the world to work out”, this post is for you.

I understand where you’re coming from, it’s hard to understand what it’s like in someone else’s shoes if you have never tried them on.

And let’s get one thing very clear from the start, this is NOT a cry for pitty or a list of woes and complaints. I love being at home with my kids and wouldn’t change it for the world. Working moms have my utmost respect but I just couldn’t do it. High fives for you if you are working outside of the home and keeping up with momlife at the same time; you are amazing!

But anyways, I can not speak for all SAHMs, this is just a piece of my story from a day in my life with my kids.

Here goes…

  • wake up to crying baby who wants to nurse
  • feed/settle the baby and she falls back asleep (yay me! this is not always the case!)
  • drift off to sleep just as you hear “mommmmmma!” over the monitor
  • get up with the older minions, ages 5 and 3
  • get breakfast and juice, get dressed, discover that the tv is broken
  • walk dog
  • straighten up bedroom/make bed
  • baby is up, time for a diaper change
  • make a smoothie for breakfast which will be forgotten off and on all morning until I finally finish it
  • fold laundry
  • remind kids to not drop cereal on the floor
  • remind kids to put cups back on table
  • settle a dispute about the superiority of different animals and dinosaurs
  • feed baby again
  • clean up a potty accident
  • more laundry
  • attend a dinosaur birthday picnic in the playroom and sing Happy Birthday
  • start making lunch
  • convince tiny dictators that they like tuna
  • attempt to feed the baby some solid food that ends up in her hair, on her face, in every crack of the highchair, but somehow avoids the bib entirely
  • wash hands and faces and make sure the older minions go potty
  • announce that it is rest time and they may pick out 3 books each to take to their beds
  • live an entire lifetime while waiting for them to choose the books
  • tuck them in
  • clean up after lunch
  • another diaper change
  • nurse baby to sleep

This is the rare and glorious part of the day when all 3 are quiet at the same time. The time when everyone chides you to “sleep while the baby sleeps” which sounds good in theory but is completely impractical. This is the only part of the day when I get to do my grow up things like email/budget/make phone calls/write lists (I love lists) or just take a time out and veg with Facebook or Pinterest for a few blissful moments.

I won’t bore you with listing out the rest of my day (although I do seriously love lists) but it was twice as busy as the first half. In fact, as I write this, the baby is strapped to my back in an attempt to get her to fall asleep because it is 12:20am.

My life is busy. My life is loud. My house is usually messy. There are always things waiting to be done that will have to wait for “another day”.

And guess what? I love it. I’m exhausted and sometimes I crack and become a scary-mommy but I love it.

I just wish I could get this baby to sleep…zzzzzzz

NEXT MORNING UPDATE:

she finally crashed on my back around 12:45am, at which point I got her into bed (very, very, very carefully) and took a shower. I was blissfully about to fall asleep as of 1:15am…and then it happened…I sneezed. Guess who woke up? Yes. Laelynn woke up crying because I sneezed. I’m thinking about getting a nose job; maybe one where they just remove it altogether to prevent this from ever happening again.

Fast forward through the hour it took to get her back to sleep and the 5am wake up to nurse and we are finally asleep again when I hear Haven begin sobbing over the monitor. I rushed to see what was wrong and was greeted by cries of “mommy no! mommy please don’t cut my hair! don’t cut my beautiful hair!”. Sigh, she was dreaming…and the commotion woke up Laelynn. Again. Thankfully, night this rough are rare. Baby  girl usually only wakes up once or twice to nurse and goes right back to sleep.

Back to the original point though, if ever you wondered what a SAHM does, it’s a little bit of everything…except sleeping
