Our Super Simple Valentines Day

I know, I get it, Valentines Day is very polarizing. You either love it and make heart shaped everything and decorate and go Pinterest nuts, or, you hate it and post snooty statuses about the “hallmark holiday” on FaceBook. I tend to fall into the first category, but without the high maintenance reputation that many Vday lovers have. I love to decorate and make everything hearts and do special things but I don’t go for the big ticket gifts or over-the-top night outs.

Being the simple minded Vday lover worked in my favor this year because it was super simple by necessity.

Haven and I started getting a little sniffy last week but it was probably just allergies, no big deal. Then, Laelynn started getting a runny nose, then a fever, then a cough… and then…it happened. The thing that all mothers dread but is absolutely inevitable with babies; she sneezed directly into my face. I’m talking hard-core germ sharing here. I actually felt the droplets of doom hit my open eyes and nose. The next day, my fate was sealed when a snotty and drooly hand was shoved into my mouth. Lovely.

Sure enough, my slight allergy issues turned south and we both were feeling pretty miserable about 24 hours later. We tried to wait it out and treat at home with essential oils and lots of juice but, after three days, I felt like we were losing the battle so I took her to the doctor. She had a virus (thank God that she was negative for the flu and rsv!) that had turned into a terrible sinus infection and ear infection.

Long story short, my box of Vday decorations is sill untouched on the table and Laelynn and mommy have been couch bound this year. There would be no pinterest projects, the girls matching dresses will wait til next week, no heart shaped anythings, we are just happy to drink our soup and hot tea. Daddy has been our hero and bought about 1000 boxes of tissues and has taken care of Jonah and Haven. Thankfully, we are on the mend now.

But you know what? It was still a perfect Valentines day.

My hubby got to be home with us, we had yummy GF pizza for dinner, we did make a very short trip to the playground for some fresh air where we got to feed the ducks; we just enjoyed being together. Michael brought me beautiful red roses and gave me the best valentine in the history of Valentines Day.

When we had just become reacquainted, in 2005, he sent me a cute little email valentine that he had programed himself that said “Just a note to say, happy Valentines Day!” At the time it was nothing romantic because we had only been speaking for about a week, but I still count it as our first little Vday message. This year, he did the sweetest thing in the entire world. Instead of a card, he dug up the old email and figured out how to print it in stages so that it could be assembled into a flip book! Seriously, how unbelievably adorable is that? I’ve got a keeper <3

He also bought Haven a balloon and Jonah a red matchbox car. Because he is not only the best hubby, he is the best daddy.

I’m telling you guys, I am so so so blessed.

I hope you all had a great Valentines Day too and please remember, whether you are pro or anti Vday, it’s always a good idea to tell the people you love how much you treasure them.

1 John 4:7-8

7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love is of God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
