Moving on up…

…to the east siiiiiide…

I never liked that old show but it still gets in my head whenever I think about moving.

Anyways, it’s been a while since the last post because, well, moving. Michael and I moved several times before we had kids and I always found it enjoyable. The last time we moved was from a small apartment into a larger rental house when Jonah was barely one year old. We stayed in that house for five years and brought home two more babies there.

After we found our first home and told people that we were going to be moving, the common theme in the comments was “ugh, I hate moving.” This baffled me because, sure it was a lot of work, but moving into a new space is fun! You clean out all your old stuff, you reorganize, you set up housekeeping in a new layout…what’s not to love?

Then I experienced moving as a family of five.

I understand now.

It’s been a fantastic challenge and had some really fun moments but it is a massive job! From the sheer volume of stuff to the exhaustion of late nights to the attempt at daily life amid the mess; it is not a picnic.

Life doesn’t care that you are packing every single thing you own into boxes. Life doesn’t take notice of the late nights painting and organizing. Life does not take pity on your struggle to make dinner without that one pot lid that seems to have vaporized. Life continues to happen anyways.

During the last couple weeks we had a medical emergency for a family member, a surgery for another, and a death in the extended family. Michael also faced a major project at the office that required a lot of him and, even now, my van’s AC system seems to have given up the ghost.

All things considered though, we are still making progress as we settle into the new house and we are unspeakably grateful to be here. The kids love their new space and we adore the privacy and view in the back yard. Watching them play outside and catching glimpses of deer and fish makes every late night and mess worth it.

Lots of pictures of before and after will be coming as soon as I finish up the big projects, but for now here is a peek into our nest:
