my weird animals

When you are a kid, the ultimate idea of fun is usually getting your very own pet. Our family always had a dog or two at a time but even then, I always wanted to have a pet to call my own. I guess that’s why, as an adult, I was thrilled to own my first pet, a dog named Cupid.

It was another dateless Valentine’s Day in 2005 and I had been searching for a dog for a while. With a job and a car, I now was able to care for an animal so why not? My mom, Tim, Lory and I went to the grocery store after I got off work that Friday and in a box outside the store was little Cupid. He was the last of his litter to be picked up by new owners and the lady there with him looked like she had seen better days and couldn’t keep him. He was tiny and lovable and I had to have him!

I named him Cupid with my mom’s help because it was so close to Valentines and he looked like a little lover anyways. He later turned out to be my real life Cupid because I fell in love with the man I now call my hubs just days later.

Sounds pretty normal so far right? Well, now he is an overweight, lazy, scared of everything, thinks he’s a lapdog Beagle/Australian mix. Those breeds are supposed to be super active and hyper! Not my Cupid, he might just be the fattest and least motivated dog you will ever meet. He has recently jumps into a whole new category of weird though….he now enjoys chewing gum. I know, that is border-lining on insane. He will literally search through the trash for gum, pick it out, chew on it for a while, then spit it out somewhere on the carpet where I eventually step on it. The first time I thought it was just curiosity because it smells neat to him but now it’s becoming a strong habit.

The weirdness that has afflicted Cupid didn’t stop there though, it extended to all my other animals over the years too.

I have a little, fluffy “lapdog” named Chloe who is supposed to be a little, timid toy…not so much. Little? yes. Fluffy? yes. Playful and adorable? yes. Lapdog? nope. Chloe is my guard dog!! She possesses zero fear of anything and will viciously bark at anything that threatens to come into our house without our permission. The worst she could do is maybe get a piece of your toe but she is an excellent alarm!

Among others is my cat Ebony who has the heart of an angel, not the fickleness of a cat. My other cat named Jack after Jack Bauer on 24 is afraid of his own shadow. Some of my friends don’t think he really exists because he never comes out of hiding. I also owned a fish who wasn’t supposed to live very long but survived for over 4 years until i think he finally just melted into the water. Poor thing was a swimming skeleton for weeks.

Oh well…it’s never boring!!
